Summary :
The overall aim of the PhD project is to quantify the value of genetically specific organic lines within dairy cattle breeding. The first part of the PhD project includes definition of an organic breeding goal for each of the dairy breeds used in Denmark and Sweden based on results from the current Danish project ?The optimal cow?. These breeding goals will be amended by non-market values (Olesen et al., J. Anim. Sci. 78, 2000). In the second part of the project, breeding schemes will be simulated by means of the stochastic simulation program ADAM (Pedersen et al., Livest. Sci. 121, 2009) and evaluated. The breeding scheme used in each breed today will be compared with respect to genetic gain and rate of inbreeding for a large number of alternative breeding schemes through computer simulations. The dimensions that will be explored are: 1) breed (Nordic Holstein; Nordic Red; Danish Jersey), 2) breeding goal (conventional; organic; organic with non-market values), and 3) reference population (only conventional cows; organic and conventional cows). The candidate needs to be very skilled within quantitative genetics and modelling both in relation to derivation of economic values and development and use of dense Fortran programs for breeding scheme simulation.
